What We Stand For

We advocate for sustainable, accessible, affordable, inclusive, and equitable transportation solutions that effectively address the climate crisis and our transportation challenges. Transportation is Maryland’s number one source of greenhouse gas emissions. Maryland’s future relies on sustainable transportation solutions, not highway expansions. Sustainable transportation solutions also spur more economic development and increase socioeconomic mobility.

For years, we’ve said, ‘One more lane will fix it,’ but that inevitably — and quickly — leads to more driving and traffic. New highway lanes increase pollution, promote sprawl, and harm the natural environment. Instead, we have a better vision.

1. Transit Projects

This could include future light rail extensions, bus rapid transit, MARC service expansion, improved and expanded bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and inter-jurisdictional transit connections.

3. balanced land use

Creating more homes and business opportunities around high-capacity transit stations and corridors gives more people the ability to use transit, bike, or walk, rather than drive.

2. demand management

Policies and programs like reduced transit fares, free transfers, and increased and improved Park & Ride locations, as well as working with employers to offer transit benefits and teleworking, can go a long way to taking cars off the road.

4. transit-oriented affordable housing

Many people drive because affordable housing options are far from the places they need to go. Investments in affordable housing near transit, jobs, and other amenities will help take cars off the road and create more walkable, livable communities.
